ATLANTIC STATES MARINE FISHERIES COMMISSION

States Schedule Hearings on Striped Bass Draft Addendum II
Public Somment Accepted Until October 1

Atlantic coastal states from Maine through North Carolina have scheduled their hearings to gather public comment on Draft Addendum II to Amendment 6 to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Atlantic Striped Bass.  The meeting for our area is scheduled for:

TUESDAY, JULY 13, 2010 at 7:00 P.M.

Fayerweather Yacht Club

51 Brewster St. - Bridgeport, CT

Contact:  David Simpson  (860) 434-6043

The Draft Addendum proposes two changes to the striped bass management program: (1) an increase in the coastal commercial quota, and (2) revising the definition of recruitment failure based on Technical Committee advice.

PRIVACY OF LAKEFRONT PROPERTY OWNERS

Those members fishing on Taunton Lake at night are asked to display a small light on their boat,
if at all possible, in order to respect the privacy of lake shore property owners who might
otherwise be unaware that there is someone close by their dock or property.

-- FISH WITH CAUTION --

TAUNTON LAKE MILFOIL

As you are aware, Milfoil has been identified in Taunton Lake.  A survey of the lake was recently conducted to specifically located those areas of the lake in which the plant is growing and identify the density of such growth.  Newtown Fish and Game Club intends to be an active partner in the extraction and elimination of Milfoil from the lake, and there are several ways in which our members can be helpful in achieving successful results.  The points below describe both the project and what we are asking of all of our members. It is also critically important that members make every effort to avoid introducing Milfoil into the lake.

MILFOIL ERADICATION PROGRAM – YEAR TWO

All members should be aware that we are currently in the second year of a four year milfoil eradication program on Taunton Lake.  Work is underway on milfoil removal from the south end of the lake and soon the second lake weed survey will be conducted.  This will be followed closely by a second round of milfoil extraction based upon the findings of the survey.  Members are reminded that the information and requests relative to milfoil which were published last year are also in effect for this second year.  Please make every effort to be part of the solution to this serious problem.

Please take every precaution to insure that there is no vegetation attached to your boat
when trailering it from any body of water to Taunton Lake.

The following information is to be used in conjunction with the color map provided above:

  • Taunton Lake is currently the site of a project sponsored by the Taunton Lake Landowners Association in conjunction with Organic, Designs, LLC to extract and eradicate Milfoil, an aggressively invasive aquatic plant which threatens to take over the lake.
  • Areas of infestation are indicated on the map of the lake which was prepared as part of a lake survey conducted by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station.
  • The map is color-coded to indicate both the location and the density of plant growth.
  • Milfoil spreads rapidly, frequently as a result of “clippings” which drift and re-root.  These “clippings” are often caused by boat motors, kayak oars, or waterfowl operating within already infested areas.
  • In order to eliminate this source of Milfoil spread, members are asked not to use trolling motors when within 75 feet of the shoreline for the remainder of this season (2009).
  • In addition, members are asked to stay completely away from the far south end of the lake, avoiding the entire area of highest infestation as marked in RED on the survey map.
  • Members should avoid disturbing the technicians involved in the extraction process.  Please allow them to conduct their work without interruption or interference.
